the EOS R really is that different. My wife Jen has been a wedding and portrait photographer for over 7 years, captured over 100 weddings, and she has exclusively used the Canon 5D Mark III. It took me almost six months to be really familiar with my EOS R camera! I picked up an EOS 250D for testing two days ago, and was shooting with it without even thinking today! Yes. Let's hope the 2020 roadmap brings it about.įinally, this camera probably was my biggest learning curve since switching from film to digital. I desperately want Canon to announce an RF 100-400mm lens as at 30% (average size and weight saving) smaller and lighter, who wouldn't?īut I suspect I will need to be patient for that. The first raft of lenses seem to be about showing off what the new lens mount can achieve in terms of design, rather than a practical (and affordable) selection for the average user, if there is such a thing. My criticism is the poor choice of lenses on offer at present – I have the RF 24-105, the RF 35mm f1.8 and will order the RF 24-240mm shortly! Personally, I am not interested in the ultra bright lenses – I shoot mostly f8-11 so I do not want the extra weight of f2.8 lenses to carry on a small body. The RF lenses are incredibly sharp! So there is an advantage in going for them, if you have the choice. The EF 24-105mm on the mount adapter is very front heavy, so I swapped to the RF one within a couple of weeks! (A costly mistake for me, as I didn't buy it at the same time as the camera body.) In the meantime, I am gradually changing my EF lenses over as new RF lenses I like come out. I have bought the EOS R knowing I will change it as soon as something better comes out (though appreciate that I can afford to do so, whilst many people can't).

And two of those batteries last me for a full day of shooting. The R uses the batteries I already have – the LP-E6N. For the RP, I'd need three or four batteries for a day's shooting which makes charging them all a logistic nightmare when travelling. I personally prefer the layout of the RP but the smaller capacity battery is a deal-breaker for me.

For me the big plus is feedback in viewfinder on exposure and white balance, plus depth-of-field preview with no brightness loss. There is a way to go to be intuitive to use, but as the first in the range it’s to be expected that improvements will come on later models, following users' feedback. So I currently use the EOS R for anything static and the 5D Mark IV for fast-moving subjects. The refresh rate on the viewfinder is currently 50 hz the average blackout caused by the mirror up/down mechanism on a DSLR is about 120 hz, so a lot of development work is needed to more than halve the refresh rate.apparently it’s technically very difficult to do, according to people who 'know'. The High speed display mode cannot work with EF or EF-S lenses. Given that currently the longest available focal length on an RF lens is 240mm (announced but not available until September 2019), which is not long enough for action, this doesn't really help yet.

The High speed display mode – which makes the viewfinder display much more responsive – on the EOS R and RP cameras does help, but that only works with RF lenses. Rather, it's the viewfinder refresh rate which makes it difficult to follow the subject when tracking its movement.

Ironically, the problem does not lie in the AF system which is very good – though not as fast as 5/7 series models.

I will keep my 5D Mark IV probably for the next 2-4 years, in which time I expect the mirrorless models will have caught up, if not surpassed, this camera in terms of focusing capability.Īll that said, I do have some good action images taken on both the EOS R and RP so it is possible but I will say that there were multiple expletives whilst shooting them… So it's not impossible, but you have to work for them. However, when it comes to shooting action, the EOS 5D Mark IV – and other similarly specced cameras like the 1D X series, 7D Mark II and 5D Mark III, stand head (if not quite head and shoulders) above the EOS R. I'm looking forward to the longer nights as it's in low light that the EOS R really excels. Its metering system is pretty much spot on every time, too. The EOS R is a great camera and I love the fact that what you see is what you get. I'm often asked whether or not someone should move from a Canon EOS 7D Mark II or 5D-series camera to an EOS R, especially for action photography – within action, assume things like wildlife, sports, kids or dogs running around… basically anything that moves.Īt the time of writing, I own an EOS R and an EOS 5D Mark IV, a combination that suits me very well, because no camera is perfect.
